Unit leveling where units gain experience from battles and through their gained experience level up from say, greenhorn to veteran to elite or something to that effect. almost like heroes in battle or something to that effect. thanks for reading!

Has been suggested, but rejected I think because its too difficult to track individual units in the game.

I has been rejected, because in Afterwind the units are seen as a stack of units and not as a individium. Therefore it would take to much effort to change this.

I understand. that would really be a programming challenge and also i think it would be overload on the servers to track all the individual units.

The servers have nothing to do with it, it would just take too much time to implement, we already have an ok ugrade system for units, yes it needs more, but then upgrades is something the admins want less of because the more you have the more advantage you have over people who don't have it

How about, rather than tracking every unit, the experience is averaged over the stack. It's a lot less processing power and storage, but still allows veteran units to overpower green ones in an even fight. It would also allow you to combine a small but skilled stack, with a larger but green one, sacrificing some of it's elite status to bolster a green stack. This could add an interesting, extra dynamic, without overbalancing the game. I've seen, a few times, where a 3 way ruck is occurring, 2 players bloody each other, till one wins out, only to be steam-rolled by a 3rd player with a fresh army. Experience would, potentially, allow the depleted, but hardened defender to at least hold off the larger but inexperienced force till it is reinforced. This would also be far more balanced than the current upgrade system, the experience would be reset game to game, thus, even a new player can gain the same benefit as a level 9 (personal skill aside).
