New to remixing - I need help/tips

Hello,
I recently got interested in remixing songs (I love instrumental remixes) and I've made one basic one, but I would still like any kind of help or tips.
Some questions:
1. Any good forums for a newbie like me to go to and get educated? Any good books or articles?
2. What programs do you recommend for starters that are free? I will pay in the future, but for now, I would just like to try free ones. I currently use Virtual DJ.
3. Any good tutorials for using that program?
