Hun, senate needed 60 votes and the Republicans have 51 seats. Sure they're in control, but not by enough to pass everything without Dem support. Though, not all repubs voted yes and not all dems voted no so we can just blame both sides

They needed to pass a budget in order to continue to operate, democrats won't votes yes unless the Republicans pass the Dreamers Act, republicans refuse, democrats shut down the government for foreigners. Now all none essential government employees where sent home. Aswell the military stays put untill the crises is averted.

In addition to what Helly said, the shutdown is kinda a continuation of months of budget delays. For the last few months, Congress has just been funding the government for weeks at a time to avoid a shutdown. There's been disagreements on what should be funded so last night the House passed a temporary bill to keep the government open, but the senate failed to secure 60 votes for the bill so it never passed. All non essential federal employees are furloughed until a bill is passed. This includes national parks, museums, etc. Some essential services that will stay open include active military and intelligence personnel. If I remember correctly, reserve folks get furloughed until the gov is back. Some of these folks might lose out on their paychecks though including those still working. This has happened before.I think the last one was in 2013 and I think

Dude, I'm a pretty tolerant peep but you're the most cancerous liberal downie I've ever seen roaming around. Before being an ultralibcuck and accuse people go check the 60 vote majority, which btw is truthful. 2nd, your Democratic Party is holding the Government Hostage to pursue their agenda. National Interest, Common Sense and non-cancer-filled brains and egos would dictate that Shutdown would be averted at all costs in the name of National Interest, and politics wouldcome after, because Nation is the supreme value to all other petty stuff like political quarrels. 3rd You americans and your system are retarded as shit. What fucking country has such cancerous State Budget approval system like yours? Your system favours chronical shutdown possibilities and Politicians to hold the State and the Government hostage and that should not happen. In portugal, our constitution states that If no State Budget is approved, the Budget from the previous year will be applied in duodecimal's system. Much better, avoids confusion, instability and economy losses of great extent. This isn't just a mere opinion I've expressed but it's the opinion of most Constitutionalists, that blame your faulty system for he Shutdowns and state of inefficiency of your Federal Government that and the fact your Constitution is retarded, outdated and hyperigid, which makes it shit.

I actually like that rule. I know in PA, we went almost two years without passing a budget so they just had to borrow money to fund the government until a budget passed which just cost even more in the long run

Actually, Belgium was without a government for 1/2 years at one time, and Spain had no Government either for 10months or something. The concept of having no government is kinda interesting. The current governments in those situations are basically what we call Management Governments, they keep the country afloat and take necessary decisions but they are barred by their Constitution to take crucial decisions and huge policy-making breakthroughs, that's pretty much why it's negative, nobody wants a restricted government.

A shutdown falls on the President's lack of leadership. He can't even control his party and get people together in a room. A shutdown means the President is weak.
