In Civilization IV, there was a way you could make the map loop both horizontally and vertically, so travelling vertically or horizontally brings you back to the same place with the right orientation. It's not like a sphere; if you go on Google Earth and drag the map up, you get an upside down world. I'm talking about a toroid, or a doughnut shaped map. And I think it would be a good loop to use for space or naval maps.

Our engine doesn't allow it, sorry. Just thinking about possibly implementing it makes me shudder, remembering how difficult it was to achieve even "simple" horizontal looping.
